THE LEARNING FARM

The Learning Farm is our ongoing project in totally radical, kid-powered, hands-on urban agriculture and healthy cooking!

Food has a magical way of catching kids attention.

Camp Woodlark explores food from the ground up and gets kids thinking about how they can help to shape the world they will live in.

Where does food come from?

…and who does it belong to?

Food Brings Us Together

Answering these two (seemingly) basic questions is a lifelong lesson in ecology, culture, and care. Every seed, loaf, and meal tells a story of the people and places that shape it.

As author Michael Pollan reminds us, “Food is about family, food is about community, food is about identity — and we nourish all those things when we eat well.”

The Learning Farm invites children to explore those stories firsthand — to plant, harvest, cook, and reconnect the act of eating with the living world it depends on.

Answering these two (seemingly) basic questions is a lifelong lesson in ecology, culture, and care. Every seed, loaf, and meal tells a story of the people and places that shape it.

The Learning Farm is our ongoing project in radical, kid-powered urban agriculture, heritage crafting and healthy scratch cooking!

As author Michael Pollan reminds us, “Food is about family, food is about community, food is about identity — and we nourish all those things when we eat well.”

The Learning Farm invites children to explore those stories firsthand — to plant, harvest, cook, and reconnect the act of eating with the living world it depends on.

While spending time at Camp Woodlark, kids can learn ways to grow, cook, and give food that is GOOD, CLEAN, and FAIR.

"TAKE WHAT YOU NEED"
Small hands make a big difference by stocking this free neighborhood pantry.
FLIP TO SEE HOW OUR PANTRY HELPS CARE FOR THE COMMUNITY...
"...THE LITTLE PANTRY THAT COULD"
Back text line 1
Gravity helps with drainage, and sunlight reaches every leaf - a small shift that makes big ecological sense. By experimenting with planters, string supports, and recycled materials, students see firsthand how design choices turn wasted vertical space into thriving micro-farms.
Back text line 3
"AN UNDERGROUND ECONOMY"
Red wiggler worms + food scraps + some care from our campers = a magical transformation.
FLIP TO SEE HOW WE GIVE THESE HARD LITTLE WORKERS A BIG HELPING HAND...
"TURNING SCRAPS INTO GOLD!"
Inside our compost bins, red wigglers work day and night, turning peels, stems, and paper into rich, living earth.
Campers learn how decomposition feeds regeneration — that waste is only the beginning of a new cycle.
Each handful of worm castings is a tiny ecosystem in motion, proof that even the smallest creatures do the heaviest lifting.
"THE DAILY GRIND"
Wheat, sorghum, quinoa - small batch grain production has lots of delicious lessons to teach us.
FLIP TO SEE HOW WE GIVE THESE HARD LITTLE WORKERS A BIG HELPING HAND...
"CONNECTING WITH ANCIENT FLOUR POWER!"

"FINALLY SOME GOOD NEWS"
With just a little bit of handwork, old pages can find a second life in the garden.
FLIP TO SEE HOW OUR CAMPERS TURN PAPER INTO POSSIBILITY...
"YESTERDAY'S HEADLINES, TOMORROW'S HARVEST"
Campers roll, fill, and label their creations, giving new life to discarded pages while waiting for tiny sprouts to appear.
Each recycled pot carries a small act of hope — proof that sustainability can start anywhere(and even in something so boring as yesterday’s news)!
It’s gardening, recycling, and handcraft, all wrapped into one.
"sKY HIGH STRAWBERRIES?"
Some plants are natural-born climbers, and others just need a little lift.
FLIP TO SEE HOW OUR CAMPERS GROW UPWARDS...
"OUR HARVESTS ARE STACKING UP!"
Vertical gardens let us harvest more from less — transforming fences, walls, and railings into living architecture.
Campers build and plant towers of strawberries, herbs, and greens, discovering how design and creativity can stretch the limits of what a garden can be.
Our campers can bring these lessons with them into the world and get others to think differently about growing in small spaces.
"OLD TOOLS IN NEW HANDS"
With steady hands and curious hearts, our campers learn that good work begins with respect.
FLIP TO SEE HOW THEY TURN SIMPLE INGREDIENTS INTO SOMETHING EXTRAORDINARY.
"REAL TOOLS, REAL TRUST"
In the kitchen workshop, children cut, stir, roll, and crank - working with real tools, scaled to their size but not their ability.
These small acts of craftsmanship build something deeper than a meal — they build capable hands and calm focus
. In using tools safely and with purpose, campers connect to the long lineage of homestead makers who learned, by doing, how creation and respect always go hand in hand.
